One or more phd stipends in hygrothermal building physics with specific focus on hydrophobization (SBi-17066)
At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Danish Building Research Institute (Department of building technology and management) one or more PhD stipends in hygrothermal building physics with specific focus on hydrophobization are open for appointment from 1 October, 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for 3 years. Urban environments in Danish and many European cities are characterized by buildings with masonry facades. Conservation of these buildings requires that the brickwork is maintained and that the buildings' energy and indoor performance is improved to fit the demands of the future. Internal insulation is often the only way to improve the thermal insulation of older buildings with solid masonry, as it is not acceptable to change the appearance of these buildings. Internal insulation, however, can potentially lead to moisture-related damage in the building as the insulation changes the hygrothermal conditions of the original structure and makes it more vulnerable to e.g. driving rain, biological growth and frost. Therefore, there is a need to understand and reduce the risk of damage when using internal insulation. Hydrophobic treatment of the external surface is an option that should be investigated further.
